The core text for this course is Common Ground: Second Language Acquisition Goes to the Classroom by Florencia G. Henshaw and Maris D. Hawkins. Each week during this six-week course you will read and discuss one of the book’s chapters. This course is a unique opportunity to take a deep dive into second Language acquisition with Scott Thornbury as your facilitator.

 Common Ground is a book that aims to help language teachers understand and apply the most important concepts from second language acquisition (SLA) research. The book is divided into two parts: the first part explains the theoretical foundations of SLA, such as input, output, interaction, feedback, and individual differences. The second part provides practical examples and activities for teaching different language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.
